Abeja 2013 Chardonnay

7,020円

The 2013 vintage was the warmest I have seen and these are not the best conditions for producing our style of Chardonnay. We like low pH, low alcohol, and balanced acidity, the opposite of which can occur in a warm year. However, we were able to make the proper adjustments in the vineyard to achieve flavor maturity at lower sugar levels and we were very selective in choosing which barrels would go into the blend. I like the balance of tropical fruit and acidity that comes from our cooler climate sites, and the body and balance in the mouth that is the result of a bit more time on the vine.

This is a Chardonnay that is lively, bright, and juicy, with the perfect ratio of fruit, weight, and wood. Creamy green apple, Meyer lemon, and honeyed stone fruits of peaches and nectarines are complemented with the tiniest hint of apple pie spice. The vineyard sources are our two favorites: Celilo and Conner Lee. One-hundred-percent barrel fermentation in tight-grained French oak keeps the wood in check. Minimal lees stirring because of the warm vintage also keeps the richness in balance. The neutral strain of malo-lactic bacteria allows the nose to reflect the delicate varietal characters.

The proper dish and music for this wine is simple: properly grilled chicken and the Clancy Brothers. I know many of you do read these notes and have followed the years of music and food pairings - this one takes a reflective turn. The wine world lost a very close friend during the harvest of 2014. Eric Dunham was a true friend and we were fortunate to know him even before his wine career took off. Eric had many talents and it was a joy to share in his passions. One of my fondest memories is having dinner in our yard with Eric and his dog Port. We often made simply grilled chicken accompanied by Boboli pizza crust slathered with Eric’s secret Grand Mare’s sauce. So in honor of Eric, my music selection is The Parting Glass by the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. Please raise a glass and enjoy the simple pleasures of music, wine, food, and friends.
